Ohio Public Restroom Initiative

In February of 2024, I had the privilege of being chosen to design artwork for a new public restroom situated at the corner of Broad St. and 3rd St. in downtown Columbus. The project deeply resonated with me, aligning with my belief that access to clean and safe restrooms should be considered a fundamental human right rather than a luxury. The opportunity to create art with a public service component was incredibly enriching. I approached the project with a commitment to inclusivity, dedicating time to research the city's diverse demographics. This research was crucial in selecting my seven models, whose varied backgrounds in gender, race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation are thoughtfully represented in the artwork. By incorporating these elements, I aimed to ensure that the art truly mirrors the rich, diverse fabric of the Columbus community.

In addition to celebrating the city’s diversity, “Visage of Columbus” incorporates symbolic elements into the design. I chose buckeye leaves and red carnations as a tribute to Ohio’s state flower and state tree. These additions serve as a local touchstone, connecting the artwork more deeply to its geographic roots. I am thrilled about how the final design reflects the spirit and identity of Columbus while also contributing to the essential public service that the restroom represents.
